Thermal Delivery Engineer sought in Nairobi, Kenya

A company in the renewable energy sector is seeking a Thermal Delivery Engineer to join the team in Nairobi, Kenya, and lead the technical delivery of thermal energy projects across Africa.

You will be joining a major investor in renewable energy infrastructure, delivering innovative, technology-agnostic solutions — including thermal, solar, battery storage, and biomass — to commercial and industrial clients across Africa and the Middle East.

The role covers the full project lifecycle — from pre-construction to commissioning and post-delivery support — with a strong focus on solid-fired power and steam generation systems.

This is a hands-on, delivery-focused position requiring deep technical expertise, experience managing complex projects in emerging markets, and a passion for driving decarbonisation across the region.

Education Requirements

  • Engineering degree (preferably with Honours in Mechanical/Thermodynamic Engineering) from a reputable university.

Experience Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of the renewable thermal industry in Africa.
  • Proven experience with solid-fired power plants/CHP plants (minimum 1MW) and solid-fired steam boiler projects (minimum 6t/h).
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience as a design engineer for thermal power plants.

Responsibilities

Pre-Construction 

  • Collaborate with Business Development Teams across markets to develop and deliver innovative and complex decarbonisation solutions for clients.
  • Review and assist in updating standard technical contract documentation.
  • Review tender proposals and technical specifications.
  • Identify and work with key vendors in each country.
  • Prepare scopes of work and manage third-party consultants.
  • Guide construction partners through technical specifications and provide training as needed.
  • Conduct site visits to assess technical risks.
  • Engage with clients’ technical teams.
  • Train site engineers.
  • Review engineering drawings and documentation from vendors to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Lead HSE and design safety reviews.

Construction and Commissioning 

  • Manage technical delivery of projects with the Project Manager.
  • Oversee design by vendors, contractors, and third-party consultants.
  • Manage technical interfaces and relationships with external consultants.
  • Lead internal technical team on each project.
  • Ensure compliance with PPA and technical requirements.
  • Support implementation of QA/QC plans and acceptance testing.
  • Conduct regular site visits and manage technical compliance during construction.
  • Supervise construction partners’ technical teams and ensure commissioning processes meet internal standards.
  • Ensure all technical documentation aligns with internal requirements.

Post-Commissioning 

  • Manage contractor/vendor technical liabilities.
  • Assess plant performance against PPA and vendor obligations.
  • Oversee O&M technical obligations of partners and contractors.
  • Conduct project debriefs and provides feedback to the internal technical team.

Reporting 

  • Fulfill internal reporting and management requirements.
  • Provide regular project updates and briefings.

As a lean organisation, team members are expected to contribute beyond their core responsibilities, including involvement in project development, sales, reporting, and administrative tasks.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative team player.
  • Excellent written English; additional African languages an advantage.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and relevant design software.
  • Passion for decarbonisation in Africa.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong understanding of the technical aspects of Thermal markets
