Unico Mechanical Corp secures USD 28M contract

Unico Mechanical Corp, a provider of engineered rotating equipment services, has secured a USD 28 million contract from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to replace two 156-inch Butterfly Valves at the Blue Mesa Hydro Electric Powerplant in Colorado.

This significant project is part of the Colorado River Storage Project and aims to enhance the operational efficiency and reliability of the power plant, which provides hydropower to the surrounding areas.

The scope of work includes the complete replacement of two 156-inch (3.96m) Butterfly Valves and hydraulic systems, as well as the thorough refurbishment of two 84-inch Ring Follower Gates and associated structural modifications.

Key technical aspects of the project include:

  • Valve Replacement: Installation of custom-designed Butterfly Valves featuring stainless steel seats, resilient seals, and advanced hydraulic actuators for long-lasting, maintenance-free operation.
  • Ring Follower Gates: Rehabilitation of the two 84-inch Ring Follower Gates, including weld repairs and re-machining of critical components such as the gate leaf and body.
  • Hydraulic Power Unit: Replacement of outdated hydraulic power units with new, high-performance systems to enhance valve operation efficiency.

Work on the project is slated to commence in December 2024, with an expected completion date of September 2028. To ensure timely delivery and maintain quality standards, Unico Mechanical will partner with Adams Valves for the design and fabrication of the Butterfly Valves.
